Children and young adults
Discover your library
The library has a wide range of materials for children and young adults. Borrow books, films, video and board games, comics, magazines and music. We also have separate areas for children and young adults. Read, play or attend an event.
Your library card lets you take home lots of books and other materials. You can apply for a card in person at any Vaasa city library location.
If you are under 15 years old, you must have a parent or guardian sign your library card application. Print the form or get a paper form from a library. Fill the form with your mother or father, and return it to the library.
You will receive your card immediately and you can start using it in all Vaasa city library locations.
If you are 15 years old or older, you may apply for a library card with a photo ID.
Using the library
You can borrow books at the customer service desks or at the self-checkout machines. To borrow books on the self-checkout machines you need your library card and your four-digit PIN. Do not hesitate to ask the staff for help.
Use your library card, plus your four-digit PIN to borrow items through a self-checkout machine. If you do not have a PIN, request it from any of the library service desks. Choose a PIN that you can easily remember.
The loan period usually 4 weeks. The loan period for films, games, magazines and CDs is 2 weeks. You must return your borrowed items to the library by the end of the loan period. The due date is the last day on which you can return your loans. All borrowed items have a due date. Check the due date on your loan receipt.
If you do not want to return your loan by the end of the loan period, renew the loan at the library, over phone, or online. You will not be able to renew your loan if someone else has reserved it.
Is the item you are looking for checked out to another customer? Reserve the item online or at the library. You can also reserve items that are available on the shelf.
Choose the library where you would like to pick up the item. We will send you a notice (e-mail, text message, letter) when your item is available for pick-up. The notice also shows the last pick-up date. Reservations are free of charge.
Return your loans to any Vaasa city library location. At the main library, you can also use the the self-checkout machine on the first floor.
How is the material arranged?
Each item has its own place in the library. There are separate sections for non-fiction, fiction, and other materials, and for materials for different age groups.
The non-fiction section has books on many different subjects. Non-fiction books contain facts; they are not made-up stories. Non-fiction is arranged by subject. For example, all books about dinosaurs in all languages are in the same section.
Fiction books are stories about imaginary people and events. The fiction section has picture books, fairy tales, novels, comics, poems and plays. Fiction is arranged by language. Fiction in Finnish, Swedish and English all have their own sections.
